TUESDAY REVIEWS-DAY – BOOK REVIEW – WATCHER by SARA DAVISON

THE BLURB

Someone or something is watching Kathryn Ellison.

Kathryn thought she had buried memories of That Night for good—until Nick Lawson returns, reigniting her long-suppressed feelings for him. Seeing Nick has always reminded her too much of the horrible night that changed her life. As much as she wants to be with him, she wants even more to forget. When Nick unexpectedly shows up at her family ranch, Kathryn knows it is finally time to let go of the traumatic past that has held her captive for so long.

David Henley is a captive too—of the dark secret involving Kathryn, a secret he’s kept even from his wife. Now the truth is about to be revealed. And when it is, he could be stripped of everything in his life that matters to him.

A storm is brewing in the spiritual realm, and its effects reverberate through the natural world, summoning otherworldly Beings to the ranch. While Kathryn confronts the memories of That Night and struggles to let them go, she is not as alone in her home as she thinks.

As spiritual and temporal forces collide, Kathryn—and everyone she loves—is about to be caught in the crossfire.

** Christian fiction that deals with a sensitive subject.

MY REVIEW

Rarely is a story so poignant, so gripping, so horrific, and yet so eloquent in its telling. With a sprinkling of humor, even. And yet, Ms. Davison has gifted her readers with such a treasure.

Watcher opens the veil to the spirit world, reminding us that even when we can’t (or don’t want to) see God, He is always with us. So, too, are spiritual beings, both heavenly and otherwise.

Most of us have not endured the extreme trauma Kathryn has. But all of us have faced trials. And all of us carry scars and memories, and baggage. All of us struggle to let go, to forgive, to truly walk in all that Father God has for us.

Ms. Davison chronicles Kathryn’s healing—and release—from the event that changed her life, and scarred her spirit. So many elements conspire to restore her to wholeness, or to destroy her completely—very literally a battle of good versus evil. The author doesn’t sugar coat the truth, though she does provide a break in the tension with the voice of the narrator—The Watcher.

Oh! How I wanted to wrap Kathryn in a great hug and make it all go away, make the “boo-boo” better. I yearned for her to find that peace that only comes from God, that full and final healing. I eagerly turned pages, awaiting the moment her victory arrived.

Nick. Near to sainthood, methinks. It’s not many men who would wait as he did, so sure of his love for her. Grace personified.

The threads of this story, the crisscross of the characters’ lives—Kathryn, Nick, Halyna, David, Dylan—for good, for evil, for God’s purpose. Ms. Davison takes her cue from God Himself, and does not take free will from her characters.

A story of forgiveness and one woman’s journey to healing, the impact is deep and weighty, and it will linger with me for a long time.

MY REVIEW

Ms. Davison plunges the reader headlong into a heart wrenching tragedy. Taut storytelling, riveting plotline, the author gives the reader a page-turning, thrilling ride.

If the story wasn’t already compelling enough, Ms. Davison reaches into the human heart, drawing us through the journey of grief. The trauma to the heart, the devastation to relationships. The thin grip on self-preservation, and the journey back to faith and wholeness.

Ms. Davison broaches the subject of child abduction, and neatly twists the threads of his rescue against the seeming logic and defense of his captors, pulling the reader into the action. The juxtaposition of “rescuing” children from abusive situations against the web of red tape involved within the system.

The uneasy rapport between Holden, Mikayla, and Jax gives a dimension of reality. Holden’s grief, Mikayla’s history, and Jax’s mysterious [SPOILER], as their rapport builds into trust.

So many elements in this story that touch this reader’s heart.

TUESDAY REVIEWS-DAY – BOOK REVIEW – LOST DOWN DEEP by SARA DAVISON

THE BLURB

She is the only one who can tell the police who attacked her in her home.
If only she could remember …
Summer Velasquez is on the run from a man she has no recollection of after an attack she can’t recall.
Every face in the crowd is a potential suspect, so how is Summer supposed to know who is a threat to her and who isn’t?
After fleeing her assailant and the parents who lied to her about what happened, she changes her name and seeks refuge in Elora, Ontario. The small town feels familiar, although she has no memory of ever having been here.
Even in what should be a safe place, she can’t shake the feeling that she is being watched.
When Ryan Taylor strolls into the Taste of Heaven Café where she works, Summer is immediately drawn to him. However, he may not be who he says he is either. As her suspicions grow, Summer prepares to run again.
But at least one person is determined to stop her. Permanently. And if she can’t remember who he is, this time he may succeed.

MY REVIEW

If forgetting where you put your keys or your glasses is frustrating, imagine forgetting whole years of your life. It’s like a nightmare that follows you around 24/7.

Summer Velasquez is living that nightmare. And without a clue who she can and can’t trust—somebody attacked her, after all—she flees for her own safety and for that of her parents.

But how does a person live a manufactured life and juggle very real feelings and emotions? How can one find the truth while, in fact, living a lie.

Ms. Davison takes equal parts fear and uncertainty, trust and affection—and patience—and whips them together to create a dramatic story of discovery. The balance of human interaction and reaction, the depth of emotion, the tension of the unknown needling every moment of every day. The chilling final scenes, and the touching [SPOILER], combine to make this a page-turning story that lingers after the final words are read.

EXCERPT

She couldn’t remember ever setting foot in this town, but somehow, as she gazed out over the rooftops of the houses on the far side of the river, she was filled with a sense of something she couldn’t quite identify. Home, maybe? Perhaps the place reminded her of somewhere else she had been. Or maybe—she pressed a hand to her chest—maybe she had been here in the last few years and the memory of the town was one of the countless others that had been erased from

her mind. She turned and sagged against the stone. If she had been here, did she know anyone in town? Would someone recognize her? If so, maybe she wasn’t as safe as she’d hoped.

An acrid smell wafted on the air. Summer looked down and frowned. Someone had tossed a cigarette butt into a cleared area beneath a tree. A dry, rust-brown leaf curled beneath the still-burning butt, tendrils of smoke winding up around its edges. She frowned. The tree could have caught on fire. How could anyone be so careless? She strode over and stomped on the leaf and the cigarette, grinding both deep into the ground until she was certain any chance of a flare-up had passed. Summer glanced around. She hadn’t noticed anyone else on the pathway, but someone had clearly been in the area in the last few minutes.

A cool breeze skimmed her cheeks and she shivered. Get a grip, Summer. No one knows you’re here. The news the police detective had given her had rattled her more than she’d realized. If she was going to hide away in this town and concentrate on getting her memories back, she’d have to get over it, stop jumping at every noise and looking for danger where none existed.

MY REVIEW:

Ms. Davison’s story starts at high speed and doesn’t slow down. Her prose is vivid and pulls the reader into the middle of the conflict. The story is gripping and compelling, and not a little bit frightening—how easily it could be real!

I particularly appreciate Ms. Davison’s dialogue, the repartee and wit mingled with care and concern between characters. I appreciate Jesse’s struggle to maintain his distance to Meryn, to carry out orders without question. Meryn’s (I love that name!) internal and not-so-internal fight to honor her faith, and not get herself arrested—and the wisdom to know the difference.

This is a high intensity page turner, and I can’t wait to read the rest of the series.
