CHAT THURSDAY – AUTHOR INTERVIEW and GIVEAWAY – MELISSA HENDERSON

There is always room for a smile and remembering the true meaning of Christmas… God sent me a God-wink that day and I am thankful I paused and listened for His message.”

This whole situation reminded me of how God looks at our inner beauty and does not look at outer beauty. We are created by Him and therefore, we are all beautiful.”

Please welcome Melissa Henderson to the blog today.

FAST FAVES

Cake or Cookies – white cake with cream cheese frosting

Call or Text – call

Eggs or Pancakes – Pancakes with a side of scrambled eggs

rem:  Hullo Melissa, and welcome! Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?

MELISSA:  I was born in Hampton Va. My husband and I have lived in several towns/cities in Virginia and North Carolina. We are now settled in South Carolina. We moved here to be near son, daughter-in-love and first grand baby (who is now 19 months old)

rem:  There’s nothing like a grand baby!! Tell us three random things about yourself no one knows.

MELISSA:  I sing in the shower although I am not gifted with a beautiful singing voice. I talk to myself while walking to the mailbox and yes, sometimes I answer my own questions. Years ago, I enjoyed riding motorcycles.

rem:  I don’t sing much anymore; I’m constantly talking to myself; and I loved riding motorcycles, too! What is your favourite quotation and why?

MELISSA:  My fav quotation is our family motto. “It’s Always A Story With The Henderson’s”. We constantly have funny things happen in our family and we are blessed to be able to laugh at ourselves.

rem:   Love. It! What’s the most random thing in your bag or on your desk?

MELISSA:  Two stuffed “Angry Bird” toys.

rem:  Love that, too! If you could go back in time, what era would you choose and why?

MELISSA:  I would not go back in time. I am learning from every experience God gives me today and every day.

rem:  Now, there’s some good wisdom. Do you have a favorite Bible verse? And why is it a favorite?

MELISSA:  John 3:16 is my favorite Bible verse. That is the first Scripture my Daddy taught me when I was a young girl. Sitting on the floor in the living room listening to Daddy read the Bible is one of my best memories.

rem:  That’s a precious memory, Melissa. If you could spend an evening with a fictional character, who would it be and why?

MELISSA:  Cynthia Kavanaugh from The Mitford Series by Jan Karon. I love Cynthia’s ability to laugh at herself. She is a heartwarming and endearing character.

rem:  I think we all need to laugh at ourselves a little more. What do you think is significant about Christian fiction?  How has being a writer impacted your relationship with Christ?

MELISSA:  The world needs writers to create stories that will share His love and encourage people to grow closer to God. Being a writer has allowed me to share His message with others.

rem:  And in such a colorful and delightful way! When reading, what makes or breaks a story for you? Your fiction pet peeve?

MELISSA:  I don’t enjoy foul language or anything too graphic in any story. I believe a story can be told without those things. I truly like to read stories that uplift and inspire

rem:  Oh yes, I highlight stuff on my Kindle all the time! What would you do if you weren’t writing?

MELISSA:  I can’t answer that one. Writing is in my blood. 🙂

rem:  I hear ya!! I was “writing” before I started writing—I just didn’t know it! LOL What are you reading right now?

MELISSA:  The book of James in the Bible

rem:  Doesn’t get better than that! What do you munch on while you write?

MELISSA:  No munchies for me. A bottle of water is on my desk but no food.

rem:  Oh, you are so disciplined! Your website is such a delightful, refreshing place, filled with anecdotes that spotlight God in ordinary moments. What’s your story behind the stories? How did you discover those moments?

MELISSA:  My stories are inspired by every day experiences in my life. I think we have to be open to experience and absorb the blessings God provides for us in each moment. A story or blog message can arrive at any time.

rem:  So true, and so easy to blink and miss a pivotal moment! What was your first God-wink moment? Do you have a favorite?

MELISSA:  My favorite God-wink moments are when I least expect them. God will provide a story or message for me to share. He will give me a “nudge” and I need to be ready for that “nudge”.

rem:  I love those little surprise nudges! Tell us a little about your writing journey.

MELISSA:  I have always loved reading and writing. My parents took me to the library and the local bookmobile when I was just a toddler. My elementary school was filled with teachers who cared for their students. Writing and reading were taught with enthusiasm.

rem:  I remember bookmobiles! I loved them! What is your Writing Routine? Where do you write: In a cave, a coffeehouse, or a cozy nook?

MELISSA:  I write in my home office. A large window looks out to a pond across the street. We often have alligators in the pond. There are times when I stop writing and stare at the gators. We never had gators in Virginia.

rem:  Don’t have gators here, but I love to gaze out the door (which I keep open as much as I can) or window. What makes you struggle as an author? How do you handle it?

MELISSA:  Writing takes time and energy. There are some days when my chronic back pain and neck pain prevent me from sitting at the computer and typing. When the pain flares up, I know I need to rest my body.

rem:  So sorry about your back pain; you are wise to listen to your body and rest when you need it. What do you enjoy most about being a writer?

MELISSA:  I truly enjoy sharing life experiences and sharing His Word with others. Writing a story and having someone tell me how much they like the story or how much their child or grandchild like the story touches my heart. This makes me happy because my messages always lead to God.

rem:  Something so special about our stories making readers happy. What was the hardest thing about publishing? The easiest?

MELISSA:  The hardest thing about publishing is deciding whether to self-publish or go the traditional route. Unfortunately money can factor in the decision.

rem:  What are your top 3 recommendations for a new writer? What 3 things would recommend not doing?

MELISSA:  For a new writer, I recommend to always pray first. I have a note on my computer that says “PRAY FIRST”. Also, join a writers group where you will find encouragement and inspiration. Third, if possible, attend conferences. There is so much to learn about writing and conferences are awesome.  As for what not to do, please don’t be discouraged. Rejections will come and go. Just know that every rejection could be one step closer to publishing.

rem:  Like the gators outside your windows, writers have to have tough skin! You recently published your first book, Licky the Lizard. What prompted or inspired you to write the story?

MELISSA:  Well… Licky the Lizard is based on my own personal experience with lizards. Moving from VA to SC was a big change. Along with alligators, we have lots of lizards. The lizards run so fast and I am always afraid they will make their way into the house. So, instead of being afraid of them, I decided to learn more about the creatures. I wanted to write a book for our grandson and this is how Licky the Lizard was created.

rem:  How sweet is that! Why a lizard?

MELISSA:  I chose a lizard because I was afraid of lizards. In the book, I explain how I remembered we are all created by God so there is no need to be afraid of lizards.

rem:  I remember when I was a little girl, my brother and I would chase lizards in the azaleas by my grandmother’s house! How did you choose your characters’ names?

MELISSA:  Great question. I think about the story first and then, names come into my thoughts and I go with the names that I like the best.

rem:  Did you think of the entire story before you started writing?

MELISSA:  Yes, I wanted the story to have a positive message and I thought the whole story through and then, started writing.

rem:  Licky is a children’s story. Do you think you’ll try adult of young adult stories?

MELISSA:  I am writing three stories right now. Christian inspirational romance, women’s fiction and also, some non-fiction stories.

rem:  Ooohhh, that’s exciting! What’s next? Do you have another lizard story?

MELISSA:  My plans for the future include completing the three stories I am writing now and continuing to write my blog. I also guest post at other blogs, too.

rem:  What is YOUR favorite part about the book or why do you love this book? Why should we read it?

MELISSA:  My favorite part of Licky the Lizard is when the lady realizes she doesn’t have to be afraid of the lizards because we are all created by God.

rem:  Tell us about why you wrote this book.

MELISSA:  I wrote Licky the Lizard for our grandson. I love to read and love to write. The message of loving all of God’s creations is important and I want to share that with our grandson.

rem:  Please give us the first page of the book.

MELISSA:  “My name is Licky Lizard. Friends call me Licky because I like to stick out my tongue and catch things that are floating in the air.”

rem:  Well hello, Licky! Glad you came along for the ride. What is one take-away from your book(s) that you hope readers identify with?

MELISSA:  I hope readers will enjoy sharing the message of loving God’s creations because we are all created by Him.

rem:  Anything you’d like to add?

MELISSA:  I believe reading aloud to children and sharing the love of reading and writing can be blessings in their lives and in our lives. Read on! 🙂

rem:  Oh, yes, I agree with you 100%! Melissa, thank you so much for chatting with us at my little nest today!

Birds singing, people chatting, children laughing, a gentle breeze whipping through the air and rain tapping on a rooftop are some of the sounds that bring me happiness… There are blessings in sounds and blessings in quiet.”

Licky the Lizard is one nice lizard, and just like you and me, he’s one of God’s own creations. Unfortunately, we sometimes forget that we’re really all the same—because He created everything in our world. We feel afraid because of our differences.

What happens when Licky the Lizard comes face to face with a lady who’s going in and out of her house? When the lady sees Licky, he causes her quite a fright! But guess what? Licky is also scared. Of her. They’re scared of each other! Then Licky and the lady remember that there is no need to be afraid. They were both created by God, and that’s what makes them very special.

In Licky The Lizard, author Melissa Henderson offers parents, grandparents, and educators a tale that teaches young children a simple, yet important message: There is no need to fear any of God’s creatures because we are all created by Him—and He loves us all.

BLOGWORDS – Sunday 17 February 2019 – FRONT PORCH FELLOWSHIP – GOD IN THE DAILY GRIND

FRONT PORCH FELLOWSHIP – GOD IN THE DAILY GRIND

I had planned to write about God in the ordinary moments. Then this week happened. My birthday, which was wonderful, but also an eye exam the same day. All.the.LIGHT in my eyeballs! I was wrecked for two days!

Then sad, sad news on Friday—my sweet kitty mama died. And I spiraled into sadness.

But God.

As He is wont to do—and does so often—He led me to two blogs by two of my writer friends with just such a topic.

Melissa Henderson’s blog is filled with lovely snippets of ordinary life—and sweet nuggets of God-wisdom nestled in, like nougat in a chocolate bon bon. Pop on over for a visit, and be sure to say Hullo!

https://melissaghenderson.com/

Then I saw a post today (Saturday) by Jennifer Major, entitled Valentine’s Day Tubes. She talks about God in the small things, because He is in ALL things. Give her a visit, too, and a shout out.

https://www.jennifermajorbooks.com/single-post/2019/02/16/Valentines-Day-Tubes

Now, the neat thing about all this, and what really drives my point is this: even when I didn’t have it in me to write my own post, Father God directed me to not one, but two posts that say what I wanted to say. A God-wink as Melissa calls it. A “just suddenly” as my best friend and I used to say.

Because He is. In all the details, every moment. Even when we feel abandoned, even when the bottom falls out or an eye exam renders us with a blazing headache. Even when you have a blog post to write—and can’t.

I’ve seen a meme going around that makes the point that long before Zacchaeus needed a tree to climb, God planted one. In the exact spot ol’ Zachy would need it.

Father knew I’d need to see those posts this week. And I thank you, ladies, for planting that fig tree for me to climb when I needed my little blog post—and couldn’t see one.

Truly, isn’t that what the Body of Christ is? Being the hands and feet of Christ, to minister to those in need? Even if that need is just a little blog post.
