FRONT PORCH FELLOWSHIP – THE GREATEST OF THESE

Perhaps the most quoted Scripture used in wedding ceremony is I Corinthians 13:13, and with good reason—the greatest of these is love.

But what is love? According to Scripture

In layman’s terms, I think the best explanation is that another person’s happiness means more to you than your own. Kindness, encouraging words, biting your tongue when you’d rather make that snarky retort. The Golden Rule.

Laying down our life conjures images of taking a bullet, literally.

But it’s not that only. It’s so much more than that. It’s the little nuances of every day. That last piece of bacon, the movie choice, or dinner preference.

True story. I grew up loathing football. Couldn’t stand it. Then, once upon a time, I was in love with someone who was (and presumably still is) an avid Broncos fan. Rather than go off and do my own thing when he watched football, I sat with him. And then a funny thing began to happen—I grew to enjoy the game. I became a fan, a Broncos fan—because I loved him more than I disliked football. Love does that.

Marriage, love is not 50-50. Love is 100%. All, and there is no nothing. Because if you have whatever else life has to offer, but you don’t have—and give—love, then what do you have, really?

Nothing.

And when you have love? You have everything.
