THE BLURB

Grace Logan has taken a lot of tumbles in life, but she works hard to bounce right back. Dreams shattered and hope for reconciliation gone, Grace needs a place where she can pick herself up now that her ex is marrying her former best friend. Her boss’s beach house in Santa Rosa seems like the perfect getaway, but stumbling into the attractive-but-damaged handyman next door isn’t part of the plan.

After losing his infant son—and his marriage—Seth Gibbs is left with smothering grief and guilt. Bad memories make it difficult to find a new normal, so he escapes to his family’s vacation home. Three years later, he’s still in Santa Rosa with no plans to leave. That is…until Grace falls into his life.

MY REVIEW

Sometimes it takes the broken in us to see the broken in others.

I’ve come to know that when I read a story by Ms. Ferguson, I will fall in love with her characters. Grace Loga and Seth Gibbs are no exception.

Her trying to escape a broken heart, him hiding from his, and they keep bumping into each other. And as stone sharpens stone, Grace and Seth’s encounters begin to strip away the sting and broken edges.

Ms. Ferguson digs into deep heart issues—grief, unforgiveness, betrayal—and roots them out, exposing them for the damage they create. She takes Grace and Seth through a steep learning curve, both individually and together. I appreciate her understanding of human nature, and the beauty of her stories that tell on us all so well.

TUESDAY REVIEWS-DAY – BOOK REVIEW – STAR RISING by JANET W. FERGUSON

THE BLURB

Star Youngblood has always been a fighter–a necessity after her mother married a monster of a man. Now, she’s finally on the path to the stable life she’s always wanted. Her employer, Priscilla Kelly, is a sweet woman ravaged by rheumatoid arthritis, and Star will do anything to help her. Even if that means going toe to toe with Mrs. Kelly’s neglectful son.
After being betrayed on the mission field and devastated by the tragic death of his father, Paul Kelly gave up on God. He lives life on his own terms, biding his time as a corporate pilot until he can save enough money to begin his own flight school closer to home. His mother is all he has left, and he wants to be near her. He just didn’t expect her health to decline so quickly. When he discovers his mother has taken in a stray—a woman he’s not at all sure can be trusted—his protective instincts kick into high gear. Paul’s handled a lot of turbulence, but he’s never gone up against a force like Star.
As Paul and Star strive to protect his mother in their own ways, they soon find their own hearts are at the greatest risk.

MY REVIEW

OH MY HOLY OY!! THIS BOOK!!

More than a couple of similarities to my life, namely that I struggle with rheumatoid arthritis. Not to the degree Priscilla Kelly does, but oh! how I can relate!

It doesn’t get much more real than a believer who has turned his back on God. And the struggle doesn’t get more heartbreaking for the believer(s) who love them.

Ms. Ferguson’s story pulls the reader right into that struggle, putting fiery Star and cynical and distrustful Paul at odds. Then she throws them together, and like iron sharpens iron, they discover neither is quite what they first thought.

The spiritual and Biblical elements in this story feed both Paul’s cynicism and anger, and Star’s faith and buoyant personality.

This book is definitely a page-turner, urging the reader to the end. Love and joy and hope, human hurts and human hearts, tragedy and miracles, Ms. Ferguson has written a winning story that will resound with the reader.
