“I will [fill in the blank], I promise.” Only then we don’t. We forget, or stall or delay. Or we never really intended to [fill in the blank] in the first place.

By definition, a promise is “a declaration or assurance that one will do a particular thing or that a particular thing will happen.”

But how often do we fails to keep our word?

Not so with God.

God is not a man, that He should lie, nor a son of man, that He should repent. Has He said, and will He not do? Or has He spoken, and will He not make it good? Behold, I have received a command to bless; He has blessed, and I cannot reverse it. Numbers 23:19-20

And when He makes a promise, it’s more than a promise.

From dictionary.com, a covenant is “a promise made to humanity by God, as revealed in Scripture.”

But it’s more than a promise. It’s more than a legal contract. God’s Word cannot be broken, and He cannot break His Word, His promise to us.

For all the promises of God in Him are Yes, and in Him Amen, to the glory of God through us. 2 Corinthians 1:20

When Father makes a promise, it’s inviolable, unbreakable. Sacrosanct. When He makes a promise we can expect it, we can look for the fulfillment of it.

May I dare to say that there may be conditions to His promises. Never to His love, but perhaps always with His promise. And so long as we keep our end, and sometimes when we don’t, He is always faithful. He will always fulfill His Word.

Has the Lord as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as in obeying the voice of the Lord? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice. I Samuel 15:22

I say all this to say, I’m seeing it. I’m watching God’s promises to me begin to manifest, as a flower peeps through the soil in the spring. I’ve paid my due diligence, sometimes with whining and griping, but I have also learned to stand firm in my faith, proclaim His Word when all seems lost. And I’m watching as His promise overtakes me, as His Word overcomes the impossible.

And there’s nothing more exciting, more fulfilling, more humbling, than to know that Father is pleased with me. And that He pours His blessings upon me.
