TUESDAY REVIEWS-DAY – BOOK REVIEW – THE DATING CHARADE by MELISSA FERGUSON

ABOUT THE BOOK

Book:  The Dating Charade

Author: Melissa Ferguson

Genre: Contemporary Romantic Fiction, Romantic  Comedy

Release Date: December 3, 2019

THE BLURB

Cassie Everson is an expert at escaping bad first dates. And, after years of meeting, greeting, and running from the men who try to woo her, Cassie is almost ready to retire her hopes for a husband—and children—altogether.

But fate has other plans, and Cassie’s online dating profile catches the eye of firefighter Jett Bentley. In Jett’s memory, Cassie Everson is the unreachable girl-of-legend from their high school days. Nervously, he messages her, setting off a chain of events that forces a reluctant Cassie back into the dating game.

No one is more surprised than Cassie when her first date with Jett is a knockout. But when they both go home and find three children dropped in their laps—each—they independently decide to do the right and mature thing: hide the kids from each other while sorting it all out. What could go wrong?

Melissa Ferguson’s hilarious and warmhearted debut reminds us that love can come in very small packages—and that sometimes our best-laid plans aren’t nearly as rewarding and fun as the surprises that come our way.

THE AUTHOR

Melissa Ferguson lives in Bristol, Tennessee, where she is an adjunct professor at King University and pens books that make her laugh and grow. She used to have hobbies like running and backpacking the Appalachian Trail outside her door. Now she and her husband are outnumbered, and her hobbies include diaper changes, chasing toddlers in parking lots, and admiring the Appalachian Trail out her minivan window while singing “Winnie the Pooh.” She survives by Jesus, rom coms, and roughly two espresso shots a day. The Dating Charade is her first novel.

MY REVIEW

I appreciate a story that tackles real and serious and heavy issues in life, and Ms. Ferguson does it so well.

On the surface the romance was almost too cute, the dialogue, banal banter—ban-ban—was fun and entertaining. But then fate threw both Cassie and Jett a spiral curve ball and the easy romance was suddenly tangled and tricky.

Ms. Ferguson does not gloss over or make light of the messy issues that landed the children with Cassie and Jett. The juxtaposition between their responses added a depth to the story—Cassie embracing the task with open heart and arms, Jett trying to figure how to get out of it.

The balance of gritty reality and sweet romance, with a generous dose of humor, makes this a superb read. Ms. Ferguson writes with a natural and easy style, and her debut novel is a definite winner!

TUESDAY REVIEWS-DAY – BOOK REVIEW – FROST HEAVES by ALANA TERRY

ABOUT THE BOOK

Book: Frost Heaves

Author: Alana Terry

Genre: Contemporary Christian mystery/suspense

Release Date: March 15, 2019

THE BLURB

Jade will do anything to rescue her daughter.
Even risk her own life.
Or take someone else’s…

Jade’s a single mom with one goal: to give her daughter a happy childhood, free from the fears and abuse Jade experienced growing up in a cult.

Even though she broke free from her traumatic and dangerous past, Jade is still haunted by fiends … both seen and unseen … and by secrets some people will try to silence forever.

A fast-paced, can’t-stop-reading Christian thriller set in the heart of rural Alaska, Frost Heaves is real, relevant, and almost impossible to put down.

Just like you’d expect from award-winning author Alana Terry.

THE AUTHOR

Alana is a pastor’s wife, homeschooling mom, self-diagnosed chicken lady, and Christian suspense author. Her novels have won awards from Women of Faith, Book Club Network, Grace Awards, Readers’ Favorite, and more. Alana’s passion for social justice, human rights, and religious freedom shines through her writing, and her books are known for raising tough questions without preaching. She and her family live in rural Alaska where the northern lights in the winter and midnight sun in the summer make hauling water, surviving the annual mosquito apocalypse, and cleaning goat stalls in negative forty degrees worth every second.

MORE FROM ALANA

While my childhood was spent in the lower 48 states, my husband and I moved to Alaska and this beautiful state has now become the place I call home. Even though adjusting to rural living (we moved to a town with only 400 residents) took some getting used to, I have grown to love everything about Alaska.

In fact, I love it so much, I thought to myself, “I want to share the beauty of where we live with my readers.” And the best way I could think of to do that was to write a three-book, standalone series showcasing some of the wonderful things about Alaska living.

However, it wouldn’t be an Alana Terry series without a lot of exciting, fast-paced suspense readers have grown to love. Identity Theft, Termination Dust, and Frost Heaves are filled with action, adventure, mystery and even a little bit of romance.

Three different stories. All set in my beautiful state of Alaska. With all the action, adventure, suspense, and underlying hope that readers have come to love.

One reviewer described Frost Heaves as “… full of suspense, covered with faith and truth, and sweetened with a touch of romance.”

I wrote these books to share my love of Alaska as well as God’s love and redemption with others. And I hope you’ll turn the last page satisfied, but ready for more.

If the Alaska Refuge Christian Suspense series is your introduction to Alana Terry books, you’ve read all three in the series (in any order), and you’re ready for more action, I’d like to introduce you to Kennedy Stern. Read Unplanned, Book 1 in the 9 book series. Once you get started, I’m sure you won’t want to put it down.

MY REVIEW

Not only is this my second book in recent weeks that is set in Alaska, but it’s the second one with the main character a victim of a cult!

I love the name Jade, and I could relate to her on a deep level—when my youngest was two, she went missing—and I anticipated Jade’s story.

The first chapters, however, seemed repetitious and tedious, and I wondered if they were going to lament Dezzirae missing from inside or if they would ever do something.

Once they actually did take action, the story clipped along with some serious twists. Without tipping spoilers, I felt like some of Jade’s actions were unrealistic, the lack of consequences even more so.

The setting and the plotline were intriguing enough, though, to keep me reading to the end.
