WREADING WEDNESDAY-on-SATURDAY – FEATURED BOOK – HANDMADE HEARTS by JUNE McCRARY JACOBS

Welcome to the Blog Blitz & Giveaway for Handmade Hearts by June McCrary Jacobs, hosted by JustRead Publicity Tours!

ABOUT THE BOOK

Title: Handmade Hearts
Author: June McCrary Jacobs
Publisher: JMJ Story Stitcher Books
Release Date: December 18, 2018
Genre: Historical Romance

THE BLURB:

‘Handmade Hearts’ is an historical romance short story set in New Orleans during World War II and was inspired by a true story.

Toward the end of his life, the author asked her Uncle ‘Allen’ how he met his wife. He shared about how he met ‘Irene’ at a church social in their neighborhood in New Orleans in the early 1940s. He had been seriously wounded in Guadalcanal in the South Pacific as a young Marine and was using crutches to get around as best he could.

He had many inner wounds which needed time to heal, too. He had no way of knowing when they first met that Irene had suffered her own wartime tragedy. She bravely sought to keep her grief locked away deep inside because thinking about her loss caused her even more sorrow. She needed to be strong because she was the breadwinner for her small family.

Times were tough, but these two unique individuals made it through each day with inner fortitude, determination, and the sincere hope of something greater just over the horizon.

This inspirational short story follows the growth of Allen and Irene’s relationship beginning with their chance meeting and leading forward to a lifetime spent together. ‘Handmade Hearts’ was created to honor this unique couple’s love for and devotion to each other in a relationship which spanned seven decades.

EXCERPT:

“Wow-ee,” whispered Allen under his breath to no one but himself. “She is one classy lady.”

As he lumbered home, he reviewed the evening’s events with silent approval. Irene’s lovely face was imprinted on his mind. Her ivory skin was flawless, and her sparkly hazel eyes were expressive and fit just right on her heart-shaped face. Soft, light brown curls framed her wholesome face, and her cute hat was the perfect accessory for the church social. When Irene smiled at him, Allen felt at peace. After the time they had spent together this evening, he somehow sensed everything would turn out fine.

As he made his way through the neighborhood, his thoughts remained on his new acquaintance. Irene appeared to be close to his age, almost twenty-one, but she possessed a maturity garnered from surviving difficult trials. She was at least a foot shorter than he, making her five feet three inches tall at the most. Her petite figure was slightly rounded, which Allen found appealing.

He perceived Irene Carston as an elegant lady filled with compassion and intelligence. Now he realized he had been so involved with his own discomfort and anxiety he had failed to ask Irene anything about herself. She’d been an empathetic listener, and her idea about his checking out another branch of service was superb. Although she hadn’t offered any details of her life, Allen sensed she was suffering from a deep heartache.

Allen would admit he had never felt this comfortable around a woman other than his mother in his life. Raised on a small farm in rural Mississippi, he and his brothers had worked extremely long hours to keep the farm operating. They had not had the time or money to date. Once the family moved to New Orleans before the war, the three brothers were busy finishing high school and earning a living. There was not much time left over for dating.

When the unwelcomed news of the Pearl Harbor attack arrived, the young men willingly prepared to go off to war. Despite being uneducated and poor, Allen’s parents had instilled in their sons the principles of honesty, respect, and kindness in their dealings with others—especially women. His mother would have been disappointed to know her youngest son failed to ask Irene about her own life.

WREADING WEDNESDAY SATURDAY – FEATURED BOOK– ENOUGH OF ME by PRISCILLA PETERS

JustRead tour launch page

Enough of Me: Winning the Tug-of-War Between Our Flesh and Our Mission, an 8-Week Bible Study

I’m living the dream in my fancy-pants world, and I’ve got the Instagram feed to prove it.
Who am I kidding? I’m literally holding it together with one more cup of coffee, yesterday’s dry shampoo, and a prayer.
So I finally said enough. Enough of me. I’m bidding farewell to chasing emptiness and exchanging it for more of Jesus.

If we agree with Paul in Acts 20:24 that our lives are worth nothing unless we use them for finishing the work of telling others the Good News – where are we in our quest to get busy for Jesus? In our world of hashtags, hair color, and having it all together, chances are we aren’t accomplishing much.
Enough of Me is an 8-week Bible study for women focused on what God’s Word has to say about the tug-of-war between our flesh and our mission. The study explores the barriers that stand between where we are today and where God wants to use us to finish His work.
Do you have a nagging in your heart for more purpose? Are you right smack dab in the middle of a tug-of-war between your flesh and your mission?
Often we want to live out the purpose and mission God has for us, but we’re too distracted, exhausted, and empty. Maybe it’s time to say enough to the excuses, anxiety, and interruptions that get in our way. Could it be we’re so busy chasing emptiness and playing the people-pleasing game, that we can’t find time to live on mission?
It’s time to take a deep breath and do some inventory. Let’s dig in and see what God’s Word has to say about this tug-of-war between our flesh and our mission. Let’s figure out ways to quit chasing emptiness and take bold steps of obedience. Let’s discover how we can glorify God and steer people to Jesus in our cubicles, at our dinner tables, in our mom-groups, and with people we encounter every day.
What would happen if we said Enough of Me . . . more Jesus.

Priscilla Peters is a graduate of Ouachita Baptist University with a B.A. in Mass Communications and a Minor in Speech Communication. She has been married to her husband Coby for 10 years, and they have a blended family of six children. Priscilla is the Vice President of Marketing for the largest advertising agency in the transportation industry, and she’s been in the marketing and advertising business for 20 years. She serves as the Assistant Leader for the Real Women Ministry at That.Church in Sherwood, Arkansas. She speaks often, both in her professional career at industry conferences and trade shows, and at women s ministry speaking engagements. When Priscilla isn’t at the office working, speaking at Real Women events, or blogging, she is busy cheering on her Arkansas Razorbacks, chaperoning her daughter at her competitive dance events, and laughing way too loud about pretty much anything and everything.

The super bowl of the comparison game is played out on our social media newsfeeds every day. If we’re not careful, the highlight reels of our friends and followers hijack our thoughts and consume us in every possible way.

As I’m writing this, it’s the first official week of summer, and the vacation posts in my Facebook feed have me in a funk. I have friends in Costa Rica, Turks and Caicos, the Gulf Coast, and various other fabulous vacay destinations. Meanwhile, I’m unloading the car from our staycation an hour south of our home. Tiny umbrella drinks and poolside service were not on the menu. #ArkansasPartyof7

I’m caught up in it all—focusing on how I can make a humble lake house look like an all-inclusive resort in the Caribbean through Instagram filters and selfies with just the right angle. I’m chasing likes, comments and shares, instead of chasing a God that’s sitting back waiting for the whistle to blow on this comparison game.

Here’s what I’ve learned about the comparison game:

I will never win.

It’s no fun. Ever.

Even on the off-chance that I do win a round, it feels icky and does not fulfill me.

It’s exhausting, demoralizing, and toxic to my soul.

When I surrender my spot as the MVP of the comparison game, I can breathe. I can finally fulfill my duties on the roster I was meant to play for, in a game focused on eternities.

AUTHOR INTERVIEW:

  1. How did you decide that you wanted to write Christian romance?  What inspired this?
When I rededicated my life to Christ, I wanted to be used by Him. It wasn’t until I went back to school to get my Bachelor’s degree in English that the writing bug really called to me. Not that it hadn’t before, but that it could actually be a way to reach people. I went to my local library to see if they had any books like this. I had never heard of Christian fiction so once I found the section, I began devouring the books and the lessons found between the pages.
  2. How often do you hear from your reader fans? Do you have any funny and/or awkward stories?
I hear from readers maybe once a month. Usually it’s because they’re sharing a review with me or they just want to share how the story touched their hearts.
  3. What inspired the idea forGrace Restored?
When I wrote book one, I knew the characters for each series. It wasn’t until I was midway through book one, Returning Home, that I realized how much of a story Guy and Michelle had. As soon as I finished the first draft of RH, I dove into Grace Restored with anticipation. They did not disappointment me.
  4. What do you want readers to take away from reading Grace Restored?
That no matter what skeletons you shoved in your closet, God’s grace is enough to restore You to the kingdom, to peace of mind, to faith.
  5. What is your current WIP? What can you tell us about it?
Currently I’m working on finishing the fourth and final book in the Maple Run series. This book features Shorty and Nikki with characters from the first three books making an appearance. These two have really struggled to share their thoughts with me from the moment I tried to make them book 2, lol. Thankfully, they’re opening up but it’s still a struggle.

EXCERPT:

June 11, 2003

“Promise we’ll always be friends.” Michelle Thomas glanced at her best friends, Jo Ellen Baker and Chloe Smith. Graduating from high school was going to change their relationship no matter what. She just prayed it would stand the test of time.

“Of course, we will,” Jo said in her no-nonsense tone of voice.

“Just because we’re going to college doesn’t mean our friendship will change,” Chloe stated in her soft voice.

Michelle sighed. She loved her friends, but sometimes, they didn’t seem to understand how tenuous time could be. In the blink of an eye, life could be altered.

“I love you, guys.” She smiled at them, eyes misting over.

“Aw, group hug.” Jo exclaimed.

Michelle wrapped her arms around them. Life couldn’t get much better.

The sound of the doorbell brought the hug to a close. Her parents had gone out for date night and had allowed her to have a sleepover with her girls. She knew they didn’t like her opening the door when they weren’t home, but she was an adult now.

She peered through the peep hole and frowned. Why was there a police officer at her door? She opened the door. “May I help you?”

The officer removed his hat, a somber look coloring his features. “Are you Michelle Thomas?”

She nodded. This was getting stranger by the minute.

“I’m Officer Simpson with the Kodiak City Police Department, may I come inside?”

What were the Kodiak City Police Department doing in Freedom Lake?

“Who’s at the door, Chelle?” Jo called out.

“The police.”

Jo quickly padded to the door to stand next to her. “How do we know you’re really the police?”

Trust Jo to be cynical and non-trusting. Who would lie about that?

He handed over his badge and Jo examined it. Michelle wanted to laugh at her serious expression, but something was off. Something wasn’t right.

Chloe peeked over Jo’s shoulder. “Looks real to me.”

“I suppose,” Jo replied. She handed the badge back. “Just say what you have to say right there.” Jo pointed past the threshold, as if the officer wasn’t strong enough to cross it if necessary.

The officer met Michelle’s gaze, his gray eyes softening. “Ms. Thomas, your parents have been involved in an accident.”

“What? Are they okay?” She swallowed, trying to dislodge the lump in her throat. She met Jo’s eyes, noticing the creases in her forehead. She vaguely noted Chloe’s hand on her back.

“Ma’am, I regret to inform you…”

It sounded like a recording. The words didn’t make sense. How could they be dead? She just saw them. Her dad had teared up after the graduation ceremony while they were taking family photos.

Slowly, the sound of wailing penetrated her thoughts. She wished they’d shut up. How could she hear what the officer was saying if they wouldn’t stop?

Her knees buckled and she felt arms come around to steady her.

It was her.

She was the one wailing. She was the one making the incessant noise.

They were dead. At the blink of an eye, her parents were dead.
