TUESDAY REVIEWS-DAY – BOOK REVIEW – BRIDGES, BOOKS, AND BONES by PAT NICHOLS

THE BLURB
Following the premier of her first movie role, Rachel Streetman Bricker flies to romantic Venice, Italy, to star in a major motion picture. The six-week trip forces her to face the grim truth. She’ll spend her first wedding anniversary an ocean away from Charlie. Adding to her anxiety, a ruthless publicist initiates a social media fiasco that threatens her reputation in Willow Falls, the town she’s grown to love. When Rachel befriends her female costar’s teenage daughter and learns how her mother’s lifestyle affects her family, she questions if living the dream comes at a price she’s unwilling to pay.
Rachel’s twin, Emily Hayes can’t get a break. The release of her second novel about Willow Falls is upstaged when a bulldozer unearths a skull and buried bones. The discovery compels curious residents to set up camp at the dig site. After a crime investigation television crew arrives on the scene, the sheriff recruits Emily and the new mayor to shadow the lead investigator, nicknamed She Dragon. In a town where everyone knows everyone’s business, will outsiders, a decades-old letter, and rumors from the past help solve the crime or force the most vocal resident to flee from shame?
The fourth book in the women’s fiction Willow Falls series reads well as a standalone.
THE AUTHOR
My writing journey began nine years after I retired from a corporate career with Avon Products. Now I’m proving it’s never too late to follow your dreams. I’m married to my high-school-sweetheart, am the mother of two and grandmother of four. One precious granddaughter lives with the angels. I was born in Illinois, grew up in Orlando, and have called the Atlanta area home since the eighties. Most days you’d find me in my favorite recliner writing on my laptop. When I’m not writing I enjoy reading, tackling jigsaw puzzles or sudoku, watching movies, and spending time with family and friends. Although we love dogs, especially black labs, our pets now consist of squirrels scampering across our deck, deer traipsing through their back yard, and an occasional rabbit peeking out from the shrubbery.

MY REVIEW
Who doesn’t enjoy a visit with friends in Willow Falls. And who wouldn’t be excited about a trip to Venice, Italy with a friend!
That’s exactly what Ms. Nichols delivers in this story.
Well, that and a murder or two.
This series is something of a trifecta for this reader—I’m an actress and an author and, though not a twin, I have always had a fascination with twins and multiples!
It seems both twins, Rachel and Emily, are facing professional hurdles at every turn. A twisted publicity stunt in Venice and a costar who lives up to the playboy-actor persona. The author tosses a surprise twist Rachel’s way, though. [SPOILER]
And the “She Dragon” who thrives on gossip upstaging poor Emily’s book release.
Then there’s the bones. First a skull, raising enough questions. Then the discovery of more bones, and the questions double. But gossip blows the stories out of proportion, especially even more bones are discovered.
Ms. Nichols keeps her reader guessing, hopping from Venice to bones buried at a dig site to a book release. Not a dull moment in this story, nay in this whole series. Can’t wait to what this author brings us next.
CONFESSION: I dove into this book with murder in mind—literarily speaking. I started this book expecting a cozy murder mystery. I kept reading, waiting for more details about the human bones they discovered. Especially when they discovered more bones. I’ve read all three previous books in this series and, I admit, I wondered what Ms. Nichols was doing.
Then I remembered the title, and DUH! There’s Bridges and Books in there, too. I felt so chagrinned. I mean, I was totally enjoying the story. And of course, the characters are all old friends by now.
As I read, I realized, of course, that Ms. Nichols had deftly woven three seeming disparate threads into one single braid. And a story that grabbed me and held tight.
