Time heals all wounds . . . or does it?

Asia Butler and her sister, Ivy Butler Morelli, have not spoken in fifteen years. As children, they endured brutal emotional abuse from their mother, Veronica, and want only to forget the past . . . and each other.

But the past comes calling when they each receive a letter from Veronica s attorney promising much-needed cash if they will fulfill her dying wish and consent to cleaning out their childhood home. Asia and Ivy reluctantly return to their hometown of Emerson, Florida, only to discover the house is a hoarder’s nightmare filled with strange mementos and clues hinting that they were not the only victims of Veronica’s sadistic nature.

MY REVIEW

This book grabbed me and it wouldn’t let go! If it weren’t for needing to eat and sleep I wouldn’t have put it down until I was done!

The 1976 movie, Sybil, comes to mind. Not the dissociative identity disorder but the level of abuse that created it. The fear of going back. The coping mechanisms.

Ms. Mumma doesn’t just tell the reader about Asia’s obsessive compulsive behaviors, she shows us. Each nuanced action, every. single. time. she pulls out a packet of wipes to clean her hands or face. Or doorknob. Or telephone. Or car keys. The bulk quantity she owns. Her need to control her environment. And her past that haunts her.

In contrast, Ivy has taken her world by storm. She owns her environment, and enjoys her life far away from her haunting past. But rather than allow that past to torment her, she has locked it securely away, choosing not to remember anything about it. She’s living the life she wished for as a child, and when the monster scratches at the door, she quickly thrusts it back to the pit where it belongs.

Facing each other after fifteen years was not something either sister wanted. Reconciliation wasn’t even on their radar. Or Veronica’s. Ms. Mumma gently guides her characters through those first days of resentment and bitterness, crumbling the walls, one brick at a time.

The level of abuse was horrific. Not something most people think about let alone live. This reader can only imagine what horrors Veronica suffered to become the monster she was. [And there was a clue, at least to my mind.]

What a journey Ms. Mumma takes her reader on. Page after page of peering into the dark recesses of Veronica’s twisted mind, yet at the same time, clue by sordid clue, Asia and Ivy discover more about themselves and each other, opening the way to build a future. One without monsters or memories tucked away, hidden, forbidden. Memories that will no longer hold them captive because they now can be free from the past.

TUESDAY REVIEWS-DAY – BOOK REVIEW – THE SONGSTRESS by LORI BATES WRIGHT

ABOUT THE BOOK

Book:  The Songstress

Author: Lori Bates Wright

Genre: Christian Historical Romance

Release date: April 16, 2021

THE BLURB

Rising opera star, Juliana Chamberlain, still has nightmares of the night she witnessed the assassination of the President of the United States from her spot on stage at Ford Theater. Recruited by The Pinkerton Detective Agency, Juliana was instrumental in bringing those responsible to justice.

Now, two years later, the Pinkertons ask her once again to join forces in exposing a corrupt political organization terrorizing her home in Texas.

Texas Ranger, Cade Matlock, has a job to do. He needs no help from a meddlesome diva with big ideas. However, he is a man of his word. He’s committed to partner with the lovely songstress to smoke out the mastermind of a dangerous clan who has proven he will stop at nothing to satisfy his thirst for vengeance.

Cade and Juliana soon discover their greatest strength is in working together until shadows of the past threaten to destroy their future.

THE AUTHOR

loriLori Bates Wright is an award winning author with a love for history.

Raised in New Mexico, Lori now lives in Texas with her husband of 38 years. She has two grown kids and four adorable grand boys (who leap tall buildings in a single bound!) When she’s not writing, she’s heading up small group ministries with her husband. She enjoys speaking and interacting with women of all ages.

MORE FROM LORI

Growing up, my family loved to laugh.

Some of my favorite childhood memories are centered around my grandmother’s dining room table listening in while my parents, grandparents, aunts, and uncles told amazing stories. Sometimes I laughed until I’d lose my breath. Sometimes I sat quietly, taking in the bravery and perseverance shown by those who’d gone before me.

History has been a passion ever since. Couple that with an insatiable love for story and there you have the heart of what inspires me to write.

So, when it came time to brain-storm for this brand new series, I decided to take a known historical event and think about it from every angle. Beyond the recognized players, to the “what if” characters that might have played a role. And, ultimately, how such an event would have changed the course of their lives.

Thus, a star was born.

In THE SONGSTRESS, Juliana Chamberlain witnessed the assassination from her place on the stage. Because I love a little mystery and intrigue, I decided that the leading detective agency of the day would have enlisted her help in identifying the accomplices. Allen Pinkerton had been known to hire a lady detective or two, so she would be trained by the best. Her investigative skills proved helpful in bringing a quick resolution to the case.

Fast forward four years and she’s still haunted by what she saw that night. When Pinkerton again approaches her about a case involving her family in Texas, she accepts.

Being from Texas, I was so happy she did. I’ve wanted to write a story based in the Lone Star State for quite awhile. I loved visiting Georgia and the shores of England in my last series, but I have to say it was good to bring this one home. With all the rugged charm of the post-Civil War era, this book has a little more local flavor than my last three. Al-in-all, I believe my readers are in for a treat. A new cast of fun, quirky characters as we revisit a significant time in our nation.

So, here’s to new beginnings! Or as we say in Texas, “Hang on, y’all are in for a wild ride!”

Happy reading!
Lori

MY REVIEW

This reader has a particular affinity for all things Abraham Lincoln—I share his birthday! This reader also knows something of pre-curtain-backstage nerves—and I totally felt Julianna’s frustration and ramped up anxiety at her performance being put off. Twice!

The opening of this story was gripping, horrifying! And rather accurate to the actual events; I hadn’t realized that John Wilkes Booth was an actor, nor that the cast and crew of the play were all detained for questioning—what a brilliant stroke of creativity that Ms. Wright gives us with Julianna’s point of view! And what a unique perspective an actress has, too!

None too happy to be paired with a woman agent, Cowboy Cade learned quickly that Julianna didn’t need to be treated with kid gloves, and that she has a stubborn streak the size of Texas.

Once they came to agreement that they were working toward the same goal—after no small bit of contention—Cade and “Jules” were able to accomplish what they set out to do. And what they both had determined NOT to do—[SPOILER.]

All the characters in this story were well-rounded, three-dimensional, personable and likeable. Well, except the villains who were most UN-likeable. A generous dose of humor and camaraderie was well pitted against the backdrop of suspense and danger.

With the balance of history and fiction, romance and business, the precarious balance between the Union and the Confederacy—and between Cade and Julianna—Ms. Wright’s story is a page-turner to the end.

TUESDAY REVIEWS-DAY-on-SATURDAY – BOOK REVIEW – THE QUEEN WHO SOLD HER CROWN by JANE ANN McLACHLAN

51tbhyoFLtS._SY346_

THE BLURB

It is 1348.
Queen Joanna of Naples is facing trial for the murder of her husband, Andrew of Hungary. His brother, King Louis of Hungary is poised at her borders with a massive army ready to invade. Her royal cousins, ignoring the threat at their border, are at war with one another, throwing her kingdom into disarray. And in a few months a pandemic of massive proportions is about to sweep over all of Europe–the first wave of the bubonic plague, which will annihilate over one-third of the population.
In an era when it was believed that no woman possessed the strength and wisdom to rule a kingdom even in peaceful times, will the beautiful, passionate twenty-two-year-old Queen Joanna, sole monarch of the Kingdom of Naples, be able to survive the cataclysm about to break over her?

MY REVIEW

The more I read about Queen Joanna of Naples the more I want to know. I was introduced to Joanna in Ms. McLachlan’s first book in the series, The Girl Who Would Be Queen, and I have come to love her as much as she loves her subjects! Such a kind and benevolent and godly queen. I liked Louis at first, later, not so much. [SPOILER]

Ms. McLachlan’s writing is encompassing, and this story, told in first person, makes it even more vibrant and real. Her research is extensive and thorough, and it shows on every page.

The scourge of the Black Plague wrought havoc not only on Joanna’s kingdom. Yet she faced this like everything else—with faith and determination. Marriages arranged for political gain. Women not just as the weaker sex, but inferior. The vast gap between royalty and nobility and the working class.

Oh, how my heart ached for Joanna. The burdens she carried, the relationships we take for granted questioned. Having to choose her crown and duty over personal feelings. The deep grief she experienced.

I never studied or knew of Queen Joanna, or the history of Naples. Ms. McLachlan’s series, however, has forever etched her in my heart as a favorite monarch.

MY REVIEW

I do love a good renovation. Taking something old and making it shiny and new.

No renovation (or art project) goes to plan. And the upgrade to Darcy’s apartment just fell right through the floor—especially with the discovery of [SPOILER.]

Struggling just to maintain, Darcy has her heart tucked neatly on a shelf in a back closet. If she could just keep Del out of her face. But as the contractor doing the renovation, that’s hard to do.

Ms. Merrick wraps the reader into the story—I could almost feel the damp of the tunnels as I read. I certainly felt the apprehension and unease when they discovered the new tunnels, and the anxiety when Darcy’s apartment [SPOILER.]

Man, it’s hard to know who to trust! Just when you think you have it figured out, Ms. Merrick tosses another bone of confusion your way.

I love the depth of Ms. Merrick’s characters. Darcy’s resistance, not to Del only, but to God. And Del’s protectiveness, his instinct and integrity. His patience and persistence.

This story held as many twists and turns as the tunnels. Dead ends and secret alcoves and hidden passages. Ms. Merrick keeps her reader turning pages to the surprising end.

MY REVIEW

Don’t we all strive to be in control, at least to some degree? Do we not all resist “letting go and letting God” when we need to the most? Turn away from those who love us most, those whom we need the most.

I wasn’t sure I was going to like this book; the main character, Matt, was so off-putting. I just really couldn’t like him.

But I persevered (I’m glad I did) and I came to understand why he annoyed me so—not only was he wallowing in his grief, he was trying to control his emotions on his own—and [SPOILER] from the past.

Of all Matt’s friends, Tara was able to crack through the armor Matt had built up. She’s been there; she knows the pain he’s suffering. And man! is she tenacious! That’s a good thing when God places someone on your heart.

The story—Matt’s grieving—seemed to D-R-A-G on and on… Then again, we all know people (or have been that person) who cling to their pain. Ms. Williams certainly did justice to his fight. I appreciated how she portrayed the ebb and flow of his friends rallying around him and giving him space. The gentle nudges to move forward, and straight up advice to [SPOILER.]

Of course the element of romance was a tightwire act; both of them wanting to move into a relationship, both of them with questions.

Ms. Williams threw them a curve ball that gave them both the space they needed. Literally and figuratively. And I loved how she resolved it for them.

This story sure got my attention, and now I’d like to go back and read the first two in the series.

THE BLURB

Where Great Loss Turns to Ordained Love

When Gina Andros loses her husband Alex and almost two-year old daughter Teresa in a car accident, her world falls apart. Her mother-in-law Helena, a woman she views as a second mother, blames her for the accident and cuts her out of her life. Doing so, she turns her family, including Gina’s best friends, Anna and Christian, away from her. Gina falls deep into the pit of grief, but slowly the family starts to heal—due in part to a major event in her life. But not before Helena goes to great lengths to derail Gina’s recovery. Will Helena’s heart melt, bringing the family back together?

As the months go by, the possibility of new love arrives in Gina’s life, but is it the love God has planned for her? Will Gina realize the one she is meant to be with, and if she does, will he be ready to love her unconditionally?

THE AUTHOR

118l2cgts5qsdqnovf8034cdan._US230_Tara Taffera is a journalist living in Stafford, Va., with her husband of 23 years, and her three daughters. In 2020, she realized her dream of writing her first novel, Love Ordained. She has always loved to read, and anyone who knows her knows how fast she can plow through a good book. Her mother always says, how as a youngster, she was always asking to go back to the library for more books. She started writing Love Ordained more than 20 years ago, and she finally made it a priority in early 2020, and finished the book–a Christian romance. It was published on February 15, 2021, and she is currently working on book 2 in the series.

MY REVIEW

This promised to be a wonderful story of healing and new beginnings. Sadly, I was offput from the first page when the author wrote two totally different and conflicting actions within the first two paragraphs.

My heart ached for Gina, the utter loss, the depth of her grieving. (And I know people who have been there.) I totally get her inability to cope and move forward. What I didn’t get was her father’s reaction at a time when she needed his support.

He wasn’t the only unbelievable character. While I know grief can turn the loveliest people into a bitter shell, Helena’s reaction seemed extreme to this reader.

Between characters I just couldn’t accept as realistic and several other inconsistencies, I was not impressed with this book.
