THE BLURB

Will Edyth prove her sanity before it is too late?
Step into True Colors—a new series of Historical Stories of Romance and American Crime.

On Blackwell’s Island, New York, a hospital was built to keep its patients from ever leaving.

With her late parents’ fortune under her uncle’s care until her twenty-fifth birthday in the year 1887, Edyth Foster does not feel pressured to marry or to bow to society’s demands. She freely indulges in eccentric hobbies like fencing and riding her velocipede in her cycling costume about the city for all to see. Finding a loophole in the will, though, her uncle whisks Edyth off to the women’s lunatic asylum just weeks before her birthday. And Edyth fears she will never be found.

At the asylum she meets another inmate, who upon discovering Edyth’s plight, confesses that she is Nellie Bly, an undercover journalist for The World. Will either woman find a way to leave the terrifying island and reclaim her true self?

MORE FROM GRACE

I am thrilled to share with you my second novel in the True Colors series, The Gray Chamber, which is set in New York City in 1887. I loved writing about Edyth Foster, our cat-rescuing, spunky heroine who spends her days painting, fencing with her dreamy instructor, and avoiding society at all costs, which as you can imagine, comes back to haunt her before the end. I’ve never written about a character who despised reading, so that was a new one for me. Edyth just doesn’t like to sit still long enough to finish a book, but you’ll find out why later.

I am pretty certain the librarians at my local branch are wondering what in the world my hobbies are, judging from the stacks of fencing books for beginners, histories of New York crime in the 19th century, and Nellie Bly’s Ten Days in a Mad-House, and more that I have continuously checked out since moving back to Louisiana.

The inspiration for this book came from Nellie Bly’s scandalous exposé for Joseph Pulitzer’s newspaper, The World. In reading Nellie’s articles, I was shocked at the grounds by which the asylum would commit women and that’s when I discovered a tiny mention about an heiress with family members who had her tucked away so they could have her fortune. . .and Edyth Foster was born.

I hope you will enjoy reading about our eccentric leading lady and her fencing master hero, Raoul “Bane” Banebridge. If you are interested in seeing pictures of the asylum and to see what I pictured the characters looking like, check out my Pinterest board here.

“With beautiful description and shiver-worthy scenes, Grace Hitchcock has penned an incredible fiction story based on true history. The Gray Chamber was a fascinating and chilling read. Edyth’s story had me glued to the pages. But as I journeyed with the heiress and her eccentricities, the greed of her family which saw her locked up in an asylum against her will made me grateful for the freedoms I have today. And made me pray that my voice would never be silenced. The nightmare was brought to life so vividly that I found myself holding my breath and then cheering on Bane as he never gave up on Edyth. This is a story that will stick with me for a long time…”             ~Kimberley Woodhouse – Carol-Award winning and Best-Selling Author of more than twenty books, including: MissTaken Identity, The Express Bride, The Golden Bride, The Patriot Bride, and The Mayflower Bride.

MY REVIEW

A fantastic and horrifying story! What I love best about historical fiction is a story wrapped around true events. And The Gray Chamber delivers.

“Nellie Bly took an undercover assignment for which she agreed to feign insanity to investigate reports of brutality and neglect at the Women’s Lunatic asylum on Blackwell’s Island.” [taken from Wikipedia]

Ms. Hitchcock’s Edyth was subjected to false accusations of insanity and subjected to confinement at Blackwell’s Island. The betrayal of a loved one was unthinkable—and yet it happened to countless women.

Much of the dialogue felt stilted and awkward, and I questioned some of Edyth’s actions and choices. Then again, she was clearly more headstrong than I.

The duel of the heart between Edyth and Bane was well-parried, a true to life romance. The characters were authentic, the circumstances sadly realistic.

I loved Edyth’s quirky nature, and her socially unacceptable (for the era) skill at fencing.

THE BLURB

Quirky Fiona McGrath loves her job as a Child Life Specialist at a Dunedin, Florida hospital. As a former foster child, she understands trauma and wants to ensure no child ever faces the same kind of fears she once did. But are fears truly in the past?
Gabe Cavenaugh’s life is right on schedule. As the youngest assistant Chief Financial Officer in the hospital’s history, he has much to prove, but he’s confident he can do anything he’s asked. After all, he’s secure in his faith and has the constant support of his family.
When Gabe is directed to make cuts in order to balance the hospital’s budget, his search leads him to the Child Life Program and to Fiona. How can this crazy, hat-wearing woman, who rides around on a sparkly scooter possibly be a vital member of the medical team?
As Fiona works to persuade Gabe about her job’s necessity, he begins to see there’s more to her and her work with young patients than wacky clothes.
But will she be enough to save her program? And could she possibly be enough for a man like Gabe?

THE AUTHOR

For as long as I can remember, I loved writing. I even dreamed in plots. I also grew up attendign antique auctions near4ly every weekend, so history was as much a part of my life as chores on the farm, reading books, and playing with Barbies.

So, writing historical romances fit perfectly. Times may change, the style of clothes may take on a different look, but the common threads that unit us remain the same. Couples fall in love. Injustices happen. We fight for what we believe in. We struggle. We endure. We grow.

After graduating from York College in York, Nebraska, with a A.A. degree, I transferred to Lubbock Christian University in Lubbock, Texas and graduated with a B.S. Ed.

When I returned to Iowa, I met and married the Love of my life, David. God had written our love story, and I know from the moment we met that he was the one.It wasn’t love at first sight by any means, but I was sure he was the man I would marry–and it scared me to death.

I didn’t tell a soul, but I did write about it in my journal. Two and half years later, we pledged our hearts and lives to one another.

I taught high school English until my oldest child was born. After that, I began my career as a professional wiper. I wiped noses, counter tops, tiny tushes, tears, and  the scraped knees of my own kids and the ones others allowed me to care for.

Once my children were older and less in need of my constant supervision, I started pursuing my first love again–writing.

David and I have three adult children, but no grandchildren yet. He’s an elder in our church, and we both teach Bible classes and are involved in 4-H.

MY REVIEW

OH MY HOLY HECK!!! Fiona is practically me! I can’t tell you how many years I lived feeling like less than enough. I know, in a very real way, the struggle Fiona faced—and Ms. Seilstad’s writing touched this reader on a very deep level.

I was intrigued with Fiona’s career, and admired how she drew from her own pain into something so positive.

Gabe Cavenaugh blew into Fiona’s life like a hurricane, but as they spent more time together, he became the calm in the storm. As he transformed and the attraction between them grew, he was gentle and patient with her.

I appreciated Ms. Seilstad’s handling of Fiona’s heart wounds, and her sensitive portrayal of foster families. The interaction was realistic and genuine, and Fiona’s healing journey bore some of the same benchmarks in my own journey.

TUESDAY REVIEWS-DAY-on-FRIDAY – BOOK REVIEW – THE THIEF OF LANWYN MANOR by SARAH LADD

ABOUT THE BOOK

Book: The Thief of Lanwyn Manor

Author: Sarah E. Ladd

Genre: Regency Romance

Release Date: January 7, 2020

THE BLURB

In this sweet Regency romance, Julia knows Matthew Blake, copper mine owner and very eligible bachelor, is the gentleman she should set her eyes upon. But why can’t she steal her gaze away from his younger brother, Isaac?

Cornwall, England 1818—Julia Twethewey needs a diversion to mend her broken heart, so when her cousin invites her to Lanwyn Manor, Julia eagerly accepts. Lanwyn Manor is at the heart of Cornwall’s mining industry, and as a guest Julia is swept into its intricate world. It’s not long, though, before she realizes something dark lurks in the home’s ancient halls.

As a respected mine owner’s younger son, Isaac Blake is determined to keep his late father’s legacy alive through the family business, despite his brother’s careless attitude. In order to save their livelihood—and the livelihood of those around them—the brothers approach the master of Lanwyn Manor with plans to bolster the floundering local industry. Isaac can’t deny his attraction to the man’s charming niece, but his brother has made his intentions to court the lovely guest clear. And Isaac knows his place.

When tragedy strikes, mysteries arise, and items go missing, Julia and Isaac find they are pulled together in a swirl of strange circumstances, but despite their own best efforts to bow to social expectations, their hearts aren’t so keen to surrender.

MY REVIEW

Ms. Ladd plucked a strand—Julia Trethewey—from her previous book, The Governess of Penwythe Hall, and created a whole new tapestry.

Heartbroken, Julia leaves her home at Penwythe Hall to stay with her aunt and uncle. And hopefully heal her shattered heart. But she is not prepared for her aunt’s meddling.

Isaac Blake catches Julia’s eye—and her heart. But he is not the one Aunt has in mind.

The intrigue of the day, matches made for advantage rather than romance or love, war against the affection between Julia and Isaac. But the advantageous match—Isaac’s twin brother, Matthew—would secure Julia’s future and satisfy her aunt.

Fighting against not only her aunt but her own heart, Julia is caught in the midst of mystery and manipulation and money grubbing. Ms. Ladd twists the threads of her tapestry into a page turning story.

EXCERPT

Michael McCann had promised himself he’d never set foot in Point, New York, again, let alone the high school. But May was typically a slow month for him and his team, so he’d made the trip. However, the dread churning in his stomach was worse than when he executed a complex rescue extraction. And not just because Claire had sweet-talked him into helping the setup committee secure all the balloons to the makeshift dropped ceiling in the gym. Once he finished with the decor, he planned to escape for a walk around town.

But now, while roaming the halls in search of the custodian and his ladder, he’d found Savannah outside his senior classroom. He hadn’t meant to startle her, but when he’d called her name, she’d jumped and twirled to face him. Her eyes were as wide as a mama deer caught in the jeep’s headlights. The familiar spike of adrenaline surged in his veins, and he waited for her to recognize him. She was more beautiful than ever.

MY REVIEW (from June 2015)

https://robinsnest212.wordpress.com/2015/06/09/review-blitz-week-breathing-on-her-own/

Sometimes life events converge to challenge our faith. Or is God testing us to draw us closer to Himself?

In this compelling story, such events converge. Molly Tipton’s life is cruising comfortably along, she is faithful in her church attendance and Bible study. Two beautiful daughters, Laney and Lissa. Laney is happily married with two young children. Her husband, Travis, faithful and loving, God fearing man. How could this not be the picture of the perfect life?

But when Molly’s oldest daughter, Laney, is left critically injured from a wreck, one in which Laney was driving, Molly’s faith is put to the test.

Sure at first that she’s doing what is required of her, Molly maintains her confidence in the status quo. But as every piece of her life comes under assault, she is forced to evaluate it all, including her faith. Can she let go and trust, as she has professed for so many years? Can Molly learn to truly “be still and know” that He is God?

Mrs. Waters has set forth a story of triumph in the midst of trial. One that could, with a few details shifted, be any one of our lives. From the opening lines to the final words, the reader is drawn in to the story, immersed in the drama and heartache of the characters. Mrs. Waters is a gifted storyteller and I hope to see many more by her.

EXCERPT

Molly ran a hot tub of water, rummaged through the assortment of hair products, lotions, and supplies she had shoved into the small cabinet under the sink. Finally, she found a half used bottle of bath salts one of the girls had given her. She poured the entire contents of the bottle into the running water. The lilac smell was almost overpowering, but soon she was covered with the hot scented water. She closed her eyes and tried to relax.

The water cooled, but Molly’s disposition didn’t. She fed the pain, reliving every comment Laney, Travis, and Lissa had made. The people closest to her seemed to be the least understanding. She pulled on her nightgown. She didn’t say goodnight to Travis. She climbed into bed, pulled the comforter and a heavy layer of self-pity over her and cried herself to sleep.

THE AUTHOR

SHADIA HRICHI is a passionate Bible teacher, author, and speaker who has a heart for seeing lives transformed by the power of God’s Word. She has received a master’s in biblical and theological studies from Western Seminary as well as master’s in criminal justice from the State University of New York. In addition to LEGION, Shadia is the author of several Bible studies, including HAGAR and Worthy of Love. Shadia is often invited to speak at churches, conferences, and other events. Her insightful, witty, yet vulnerable teaching style reveals a compassion for the hurting, love for Jesus, and uncompromising commitment to the truth of God’s Word. Visit shadiahrichi.com.

MORE FROM SHADIA

If there is one universal truth, it is that every human heart longs for paradise. A perfect world without death, pain, or sorrow. A world at peace, where each of us is secure, treasured, and loved. But the reality is that the world as we know it will never deliver; it cannot. Scripture tells us that “the whole world lies in the power of the evil one” (1 John 5:19).

As a result, you and I live in a broken world. A world that has been drifting off course ever since that slippery serpent enticed our first parents to reject God’s authority in that garden paradise so long ago. In that moment, they unwittingly handed over dominion of the earth to Satan on a silver platter. But this then begs the question. Why was God willing to risk rebellion in the Garden? And why would God allow His perfect creation to fall victim to the enemy’s schemes? And if God is good, why does He allow evil to exist?

Through this six-week study, you and I will explore the answers to these questions and more as we step into the fascinating story of the man known only by the name of the demons that tormented him. To be honest, I don’t know why I am attracted to the hard stories in the Bible. The messy stories. I suspect it stems, in part, from my own broken past. I can relate much easier to the broken people. The ones who experienced times when they felt unseen, or unloved, or unwanted. At the same time, their stories captivate my heart because when God reveals what He is doing behind the seen, His power and glory are displayed in ways that make my spirit soar!

So I invite you to come with me as we climb into the boat with Jesus and head into enemy territory. We will witness Jesus’s power and passion as He battles violent storms and armies of demons in order to rescue . . . one . . . lost . . . soul. Tormented, chained, and living in a graveyard, the man had no one to help him. No one to intercede for him. No one but Jesus. As a result:

  • A demoniac becomes a disciple.
  • A house of demons becomes a dwelling for the Living God.
  • The chained becomes a champion of good news.

You and I live in a world crying out for rescue. And just as Jesus was willing to cross the sea and rescue one man from the enemy’s chains, He crossed the heavens to rescue you and me from a fate even worse: eternal chains. But praise God that through His sacrifice for sin, Jesus conquered all the forces of evil and opened up the gates of paradise to all who embrace His mercy. So come with me. Let’s rediscover the God Who Rescues Me!

“For He rescued us from the domain of darkness, and transferred us to the kingdom of His beloved Son.” —Colossians 1:13 NASB

MY REVIEW

Like good Biblical fiction, Ms. Hrichi brings Scripture to life. The difference is in making it personal, applying Biblical Truth in our day to day life. Her knowledge of history and culture applicable in Bible times is evident on every page.

As with her earlier book, Hagar, Ms. Hrichi “begs the reader to “Pause to Ponder,” asking deep and probing questions, and offers a “Your Turn” section to integrate the study with our own lives.” (excerpted from my prior review)

This reviewer shares with Ms. Hrichi her passion for the “hard stories in the Bible—the messy stories..” I, too, can relate to “the ones who … felt unseen, or unloved, or unwanted.” I therefore, deeply appreciate her probing studies of God’s Word.

The journey of this book is “Rediscovering the God Who Rescues Me.”  Ms. Hrichi asks and then answers such questions as, “Why was God willing to risk rebellion in the Garden?” Have you ever wondered that? I know I have. “And why would God allow His perfect creation to fall victim to the enemy’s schemes?” And one I’ve heard so many times, “… if God is so good, why does He allow evil to exist?”

Hard questions with hard answers. But when Ms. Hrichi explores God’s Word, the answers seem so simple and obvious. Truly, as He has told us, “For He rescued us from the domain of darkness, and transferred us to the kingdom of His beloved Son.” Colossians 1:13 (NASB)

I so appreciate the author’s heart for and knowledge of God’s Word, and her willingness and ability to craft this study. Once again, “she shares Bible passages with relevant questions. She links seeming unconnected Scripture, bringing to light revelations of Who Father God is, and who we are in Him.”

WREADING WEDNESDAY-on-SATURDAY – FEATURED BOOK – THE THIEF OF LANWYN MANOR by SARAH LADD
