FRONT PORCH FELLOWSHIP – GUARD YOUR HEART
I chose this topic because in my novel, Cissy, she heard words condemning her as evil. She was a child, and without the maturity or knowledge to stand against the curse spoken against her, she not only believed the words she heard, but lived them out for the rest of her short life.
And in light of headline news this week, it is even more apropos.
Earlier, I shared about being transformed.
We are transformed as we grow in faith. And faith comes by hearing… and hearing and hearing.
What is the value of guarding our heart? Why is this so critical?
Our words contain power. They are vessels of power, either to create or to destroy.
The words we speak transform our world. This is why James warns against being double-minded. The human condition includes emotions, and intellect, and we are subject to incredible amounts of information. We must call on spiritual discernment to know what to accept as truth. Even between two truths, we have to be in fellowship with Holy Spirit to know what He is speaking to us personally in that moment.
What we speak, the words that come out of our mouth, can undo the will of God in our lives. Shocking, I know, but I’ve done it. I would stand in faith, stand on Scripture, and truly believe in my heart for God’s promise. Then out of my mouth I would speak words contrary to Scripture. And we can’t have it both ways. We can’t proclaim our faith, and grumble and complain about whatever our situation is. Ask the Israelites. They would know. God delivered them from Egypt, and they wandered the desert for forty years. Why?
Because they complained.
Guard your heart? Yeah, ‘cause that’s where your words are born. And that’s where your life is created.
