BOOK REVIEW – THE CAUTIOUS MAIDEN
BOOK REVIEW – THE CAUTIOUS MAIDEN by DAWN CRANDALL
A family home in ruins. Not due to natural disaster or a random act of violence. But because of the actions of the indiscretions of one man. As her brother’s scheming, and his gambling debts—his sister—come to light, one woman’s life is in danger.
Violet Hawthorne not only grieves the loss of her parents, but the loss of her home. Fleeing the ruin her home has become, Violet takes a position at nearby Everston Hotel. She never dreams that the Bram Everstone’s son, Vance, would take notice of her. She never dreamed her heart would become attached to his. She had no clue Vance knew her brother, or his shady dealings.
But has Vance truly turned from his past ways? And will Violet be safe with him? Will her heart?
With each new set of characters in The Everstone Chronicles, Ms. Crandall has pulled me further into this story world. I was at Everston Hotel with Violet. I felt her trepidation at the acceptance of her new society friends. And I felt her struggle to squelch her seeming inadequacies. I visited each ball and tearoom, and relaxed with her long lost relatives, until they, too, withdrew from her. My heart fluttered with hers at the sight of Vance, and it crashed and burned as he pulled away time and again. And my pulse raced as her predator stalked her, laying claim on his winnings against her brother at the poker table.
Well done, Ms. Crandall, well done. The Everstone Chronicles has a special place on my bookshelf and in my heart. The characters throughout this series have become as friends to me.
