CHARACTER INTERVIEW – ROSE
rem: Good morning, Rose, welcome.
Rose: Good morning. Thank you for inviting me. You are too kind.
rem: You had tragedy in your life at a young age. Can you tell us what happened?
Rose: I really don’t like to talk about it.
rem: I understand. You were quite young, weren’t you?
Rose: Sixteen, yes.
rem: I’m sorry for your loss, Rose.
Rose: You are kind, thank you.
rem: I understand you left home after that.
Rose: I did. I’m not proud of it, but I did. My heart was broken and I didn’t know what to do so I ran away.
rem: You lived a colorful life.
Rose: I did what I had to do. I’m not proud of my past, especially those years.
rem: But you married, you made your amends with your family, yes?
Rose: Momma was so happy when I came home, like I had never been gone at all. And Daisy was most happy to see me. She was just a little girl when I left but she adored me. My sister, Lily—
rem: I understand there was a rift between you.
Rose: Yes, and it was all my fault.
rem: What about your daughter?
Rose: Marni is a lovely girl, so bright and so talented. And she’s made quite a name for herself. pause My poor, poor Clara Bess—
rem: She lived with Lily and Frank.
Rose: I didn’t plan that. I never meant—
rem: She knows that. pause I think she has regrets.
Rose: Yes, well. She raised my Clara well. I thank her for that.
rem: Clara Bess is happy, though, and doing well.
Rose: I am so proud of her. I wish I could tell her.
rem: I’m sure she knows, in her heart.
Rose: Thank you for that.
rem: Rose, you’ve been most gracious coming today. I know this was difficult for you.
Rose: Yes, well. You are most kind. Thank you for having me.

“I once said I should write down all the story ideas in my head so someone could write them someday. I had no idea at the time that someone was me!
Ms. Mason has been writing since 1995, and began working in earnest on her debut novel, Tessa in 2013. Meanwhile, she cranked out a few dozen poems, and made countless notes for story ideas. Ms. Mason lived with depression for many years, and the inherent feelings of worthlessness and invisibility; she didn’t want to be who she was and struggled with her own identity for many years. Her characters face many of these same demons.
Ms. Mason has lived in the Upstate of South Carolina since 1988. She lived in Colorado for sixteen years, during which time she: went to high school, got married, had babies, got divorced and went to college. Her “babies” are now grown, two have babies of their own. She currently lives alone, with her five cats.
Ms. Mason writes Christian-worldview–in other words, there’s no salvation message, but there are plenty of characters who know the Lord and share His perspective with those who are struggling.
